the Hidden Curriculum
The one factor most students have in common prior to entering a college arena is we've all been exposed to a sort of hidden curriculum. The hidden curriculum is defined as a side effect of the
educational process that results in the indirect, not unintended, learning of
particular values, beliefs, and acceptable norms of a culture. Its biggest role
in the educational realm is to mold character education which encompasses
self-respect, responsibility, and honesty (Eksi). Public schools and private schools differ in
their messaging. Depending on societal pressures and expectations, certain
aspects of the hidden-curriculum are more highly valued than others (Cornbleth).
And as our communities become ever more intertwined
with global issues thanks to the ease of access granted through social media
websites, we are seeing more and more instances of students choosing which
messages to act on, as opposed to accepting them all. Many students have gone
as far as to simply “play school” where they only appear to go along with the
trends in order to gain advantage, such as good grades and favoritism, but
never actually internalize the values or views presented.
